There is definitely a right way and wrong way to approach giveaways.

first of all you need to have a high value unique product
you will get much more subscribers assuming your opt in page
and confirmation page is good.

If you have no list, by simply upgrading you can get much more
subscribers assuming that the upgrade gives you more exposure.

plus the upgrades allow you to submit more gifts and even offers
if you take advantage of this you can build different types of list
and get buyers on your list through the offer (shows up when you login)

Many people even some top contributors don't know how to maximize
there results from giveaways, they simple use their subscriber base to
promote more giveaways and get more people to sign up for the next giveaway
so they can do the same process over and over - what fun is that?

Idealistically you want to give something away that will create a desire for what you're selling.
Don't just give away candy then try to sell a leg of lamb to the prospect.
Do something like create a downloadable video report and then have a "cliff hanger. " (just like on the soap opra TV   ) Run something like this to your prospect, after they read the free report.   Make sure they'll want more of your stuff by offering quality.   Give them more substance to solidify and compliment what you have shown them allready.   A large percentage will buy.   This has been statistically proven.

It goes with anything and everything. Their is always a few bad apples but justice will prevail. Giveaways can be good when it's something where a person can themselves gaining from it or not losing.
