Others here can address the graphics part, but a lot of us use Open Office (http://openoffice.org ) to make PDF files. It is good for a wide variety of other activities, as well.

I was going to say the same thing as Jorey, open office for PDF's.

As for e-book overs, I've never came across any free ones that make nice covers. If you have photoshop you can find some free actions online, but they are not exactly point and click. A paid program was the best I've found. Another option is to check the forums, like WF, some times you can find deals to have covers made cheap for you. Just a  thought.

For PDF's,you can use Primo PDF OR BIO PDF. They are both free. You can download GIMP which is also free to create your ebook covers.

My son get them free for me and does all the work. He is going teaching me more sunday and I will tell all of you who need help. First he gets the covers free from google.  Then you go to the left and pick images. Find what you want and change it. I will tell you more when he teaches me more.

Hi,

I also use Open Office for pdf's - I tried a number of other freebies but always had problems to get the hyperlinks to properly render live links.  Open Office works well for me.

A couple of months ago I searched unsuccessfully for free ebook cover software (I didn't come across the software Harvey and others here mentioned).  I just couldn't find something that did a good job for me, so I eventually bought boxshot3d which is quite versatile and makes pro-looking covers of all kinds (not cheap though, but I knew I would be using it a lot, and get my money back!)

Cheers

I currently use open office. . . It has a ton of great features that you can use besides the obvious making a PDF.

You can secure your PDF so it can't be "easily" copied.   You can do this by "File", "Export as PDF", then give it a name.   After you name it and click 'save', a popup box will appear.

You can choose just to print certain pages, (if you wanted to give a preview chapter).

To stop copying, click on the "Security" tab, check "Restrict permissions", click the 'set password button'.

I usually just enter something easy like the number 123 or something easier, since it doesn't really matter here.

after you set the 'password', (don't worry, your users won't need it) , click "OK" and then click "Export".   Your PDF file won't be able to be copied (by amateurs anyway).

Hope that helps,
Michelle

I hope people realize you can not go to Google images and just take any image you find there, and use it as you'd want, as what this post is kind of implying. Google images are images indexed from web sites and most time are not free to use by any one, except the the site it came from. In other words, it's not a place to get images for covers.
