Howdy.

Why is it most WP plug-ins are free? Why do people spend the time to develop and maintain a plug-in?

Besides ego and portfolio development I can't see why they do this for free. I mean it isn't like giving away basic themes when you sell custom themes - that makes perfect sense. This umm not so much.

Can someone enlighten me?

Sean

P.S. Since I've never had a plug-in developed I wouldn't know, but does a plug-in leave a backlink from each blog it is installed in - something that isn't visible to us but counts with Google? THAT would make the whole free thing make sense.

The open source community is one that is sometimes a bit rabid about things being "free". However, in the case of WordPress plugins, that's not entirely the case.

You see, the GPL license under which WordPress operates requires any derivative work that needs WordPress code to work must also be distributed freely under the same license.

There ARE quite a few people who just love to create plugins, too! They start out by creating something custom for themselves, and usually release it to the public. Once people start using their work and telling them how great it is, often they just keep going with new things... usually because someone asks if this or that would be possible.

If you find a plugin that is "stand-alone" (doesn't NEED WordPress code to function), chances are you're gonna pay for it.

Hope that helps!

Cheers!

I think it relates back to the 'open source' method of software development.  Wordpress is open source and I would assume a lot of the plugin authors have the same open source mentality.

Wikipedia covers open source here:

Thanks for the quick replies. I hadn't even thought of the whole open source angle. Link-bait, yes. Traffic, yes. Open source, nope.

Thanks again.

I've bought WP plugins and know of one popular ClickBank product that is a just a skin on a WP install.

They are out there. You just have to look in the right places.
