Hello Everyone,

I've got an interesting story I'd like to share and need advice (or confirmation of what I'm thinking).

Yesterday, I was laid off from a job that paid in excess of $250K per year.   My wife and I are in the process of adopting a child and we own our own home (a 5/1 ARM which begins to fluctuate in Decmber of this year, 2009).   We've built a savings account of around $80K, my wife works (makes about $58K/YR), and our monthly expenses total approximaley $5500/MO).

I've been tinkering around with IM for about 5YRS now but have been sitting on the fence, i.  e.  , no launch.   I have my own website (CMS), have developed my own content (30+ hours of professional tutorial videos on a popular Adobe product), have a merchant account, list server, and pretty much everything else I'd need to launch this business (with the exception a list).

I am extremely pissed at how this whole thing came down yesterday and am finally at the point where I truly don't want to work for anyone anymore.

Given the above, I have two choices:

1.   Start looking for work knowing that I'd probably end up hating it shortly thereafter (although, it would be a stop gap in terms of income).

2.   Work my ass off, day to night, open the doors to my site, drive traffic, and make it work (subscription model).

If this were you, what would you do? My wife fully supports any direction I want to take and has complete confidence in me.   It's my own mind that keeps getting in the way.

What do you think? I don't care if your comments range from, "dude, get off your ass and make it happen - stop feeling sorry for yourself", to, "get another job quick".

Thanks in advance for your ear.   If you have any questions, please ask.   I've also posted this in the Warrior Forum as well .  .  .   just trying to solicit as much advice at this point as possible.

Thanks again.

Kirby

PS

I forgot to mention that we don't have any credit card debt, car payments, etc. .  Just the mortgage, food, utilities, and my online hosting.

Thanks for the advise.

Hi Kirby,

I think you have been given the motivation to succeed Wink A reason to take action....

Do you enough money to support yourself for a while? maybe a year? while you invest in building your business?

Great you have a wife that supports you- She's a keeper....hang on to that...that's a great asset!

Hello Kirby, welcome to ABlakeForum.

First off, can you get health insurance through your spouses work?
If you can great! Do it.

Getting by on $60K pretax is very different than getting by on $310K.

Go for making a living online!

If you start to get in a pinch for money then do some short term contract work.
I like http://roadtechs.com/ for short assignments.

Good Luck,

There's a few ways.   Your problem is with a list.   Since you have everything, why not create an affiliate system for your product.   Post at jv notify.  com and announce your product.   This will get affiliates to promote for you.   Affiliates mostly have a huge list that you can tapped on but make sure you have something great.   Ensure that it is a win win situation.

Else you may try to list your program at associate program.  com.   I hope this little will help you.   By the way, where is your website, perhaps i can review it for you?

Hi Kirby,

Sorry you lost your job.  All I can tell you is that even if you are out of work, you are ahead of most people.  There are a lot of people who are struggling financially out there.

Regarding your online business, it can be done if done properly of course.  What kind of business is it? Is it a product that is on demand? Is the site well optimized? Do you know how to maintain your own website? Just curious.

Take care and good luck to you,

Hector

Kirby,

For quick income, If you are an expert in an Adobe Product Advertise on :
  Freelance. com
  Guru. com
etc.
Search their listings for work you can do.  Also think about taking jobs that you can subcontract out to others.  Think in terms of overseas outsourcing as turn about is fair play.

Hi,

I'd like to know what you did for $250K? Not many jobs that pay that although my son is making that in
medical equipment.
 Grin
Anyway, go for the online biz.  You are way ahead in your learning curve and creating a residual income type program.

I should talk, I've been wanting to create a subscription type biz for years  Grin

Best of luck and treat your wife like royalty!

Kirby,
I'm sorry to hear about the lay-off.  It never seems like to "right time" to lose a job, but it seems like this is a "good time" for you.
My advice would be to "go for it".  Push forward like there's NO TOMORROW.  You are in a better spot than a lot of others who decide to pull the trigger online.
I wish you good luck and will be looking forward to hearing how it works out.

Why get depressed looking for a job! In your case you would get depressed (A) if you didn't find a job, and (B) if you DID find a job.

So you've got a job. Hire yourself and get to work. Most people would kill to be in the situation you are in:

  • you've got enough money in the bank to go two or three YEARS if you never made a nickel.

you have a wife to support you

You've got 24 hours a day to make it happen.

Sure you're mad. Who wouldn't be. Take a brisk walk or two each day to blow off the steam. And then in a year or two invite your former boss to dinner to thank him for giving you the opportunity to attain the financial freedom he's dreaming about. Wink

The best to you.

Hello Kirby,

What did you do for $250k? Well it could be a blessing in disguise.  Working for corporations and other people is going down by the wayside.  No one wants to travel, fuel cost etc.

Hi. . . .

I honestly express my concern about losing your job.  I think there are times in life when some door closes for another to open.  If your mind is really stayed on starting your own business, then why not go on.  No one wants to keep working and earning money for some other forever.  So, i think it's a wise decision if you have taken this step.  But remember, that you have to count the cost as well.

Starting up a successful business online takes time, effort, money and requires interest, in other words passion.  The passsion has to be there, because that will be your driving force.

Best regards.
