I decided to try one of those offers for free leads.  Now I have a list of names, emails, and phone numbers (over 1000).

What do I do now? Can I run them through my autoresponder, or do I need to get them to opt-in first?

Thanks for your help!

Oh boy... (Duck and cover) I wouldn't touch ANY leads that were given to me with a 10 foot pole unless they came from a reputable co-registration company (Only a few good ones)...

Were did you get these leads?

You can send them an email to test the leads if they are interested in your offer.

I have to agree with Mike.

There are so many things that can be wrong with them that it's not worth your time, or getting your autoresponder account put into jeopardy.

And having your autoresponder account shut down is just the tip of the iceberg. In addition to having your hosting account and/or ISP account closed, you could find yourself on the wrong end of a lawsuit or criminal proceeding because you've spammed the wrong person.

Stephen,

List Machine, etc. are different because those people signed up to receive mailings in return for sending their own.

I agree with never buy list of names and email addresses.  I tried it and it was a disaster,  all I got back was hate mail.
Find a program under listbuilders and start advertising it and build your own list.  It's sometimes a slow go, but at least you know these people are for real and they are interested in what you have to offer.

Yeah, free leads? that's shaky business.   If you decide to use them.  I would take cover as the other members suggested.   You may get labled as a spammer.   When the internet first became popular, there where a lot of those CDs of email addresses being sold.   The sales material was hyped up and the lists usually were a waste.   The best leads are the leads you create yourself.   I frown on list brokers.   It's so easy to get beat by a list broker.  No one with web savy relys on out sourced leads.   Learn to create your own leads and you'll live happily ever after.    :)
