Ethan...

Virus's suck... that's why I'm tickled pink to have moved to the Mac platform... no more viruses, no more trojans (there are a few and you can get them but you have to work real hard in order to get one)...

In your case I'm going to recommend two that I have used on my PC's (I still have some)...

1)AVG - very good anti-virus with a low footprint... constantly updated... not as cludgy as Norton (which is a beast)

2) Eset's NOD32 - another low footprint and extremely good anti-virus which is constantly updated (and recommended by Leo Laporte of TWiT.tv)

Either one of those should work quite well for you... check them out...

Hope this helps...

Success!!!

I would also recommend AntiVir.   It's what I'm using after AVG failed me.  T_T

Nod 32 is a good one.  I think you should try that.  I have been using that for the past 6 months and no noticeable problem so far.

Would recommend Nod32 or Kaspersky, you get what you pay for and the free ones although good don't keep away or get rid of some of the nasty viruses and malware. Also try something like COMODO firewall to go with the antivirus for the complete protection.

Norton will eat a lot of your resources.
Kaspersky antivirus is very effective and uses way much lower resources.   :o

I have been using Avira for years on all my PC's.  Lightweight and yet robust.  They have a free and a paid version.

Highly recommend NOD 32.  We've been using it for years on two computers and nary a problem.  It is fast, can be set to automatically update and has not had a problem with an 'in the wild' virus in many years.

I also might recommend Kerio Firewall.  Tried Comodo but it wasn't behaving nicely on our systems.

Might suggest you check thoroughly to make sure that all of Norton was really uninstalled.  Any remnants can create havoc with your system after installing a different AV.

You may never know if the uninstaller screwed up. Always use the publisher's stand-alone uninstaller when removing an a/v. For Norton, you'll find their removal tool by searching for "norton removal tool" on their site.

Norton sticks! I got nothing but viruses with it. I know none are perfect nor can they stop everything, but norton sure didn't stop many for me in the past.

I've had good luck with Avast. A good friend also recommended as Tony did, Eset.

There are a lot of anti virus available in the iiinternet which actually contains the virus itself.  You need to be very keen before downloading any kind of anti virus.

The best thing to do is go to a trusted source for information and links to AV software. PC World is one such source.

Or buy a Mac.  apple
