A recent visit to some CPA network sites brought up a big annoyance. Most such sites differentiate between CPS (per sale) and CPA/CPL (per lead) in the offer listings. Some even break out CPC (per click) offers (if any). That is all well and good.

The problem is that some of the vendors try to disguise per sale offers as per lead. That is, they list the offer as "$nn.nn Per Lead", but then define a "Lead" as "the visitor buys the product/service".

I can understand such games in those networks that don't make the distinction. But in those that do, it is beyond irritating.

If the vendor is playing unethical games in order to attract advertisers, what are they going to do to the customers? And with the recent FTC actions and rules, we (the advertisers/affiliates) can end up taking the fall along with the sleezebuckets that suckered us in.

Aaaargh! Angry

hello,
thanks for information about CPA and CPS it is very knowledgeable Cost-per-click (CPC): You earn commissions with CPC campaigns simply by providing a link that visitors to your web site or readers of your newsletter click on and get redirected to the campaign's landing page.

Cost-per-lead (CPA): With CPA campaigns, you earn commissions based upon visitors to your website clicking on an ad, arriving at the campaigns landing page and completing the signup form.  For you to receive credit for these visitors they must complete the entire signup process and arrive at the finishing thank-you page.  The "A" stands for action.

Cost-per-sale (CPS): CPS campaigns are very similar to CPA campaigns, except that instead of simply signing up for something, your visitor must complete a sale.  These campaigns pay you based on the total amount of completed sales.

thanks!!

Not too bad a summary, but not entirely accurate. The "A" does stand for action, but different sites define different actions needed to qualify for the payment. Many just require the first page of the signup process, which often has only one field (usually zip code or email address). Others require more complex actions. But in lists that differentiate between CPA and CPS, filling out an app and paying something is a sale rather than an "action".

Actually, quite a few of them pay a flat amount per sale rather than a percentage. And that sale often involves signing up for something.
