You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet!

WWW
« on: February 06, 2008, 10:36:07 PM »

There isn't a day that goes by that I don't hear the same old cliché'd thing:

"That's so web 2.0"

"My site is web 2.0"

"Buy this new infoproduct because it's web 2.0"

"This app/style/marketing/idea/technology/concept/etc., etc., etc. is web 2.0"

"Blah, blah, blah ba-blah web 2.0"

The reality is that most of what is being pitched, sold, marketed or touted as web 2.0 is nowhere near what web 2.0 really is (and frankly, web 2.0 is a marketing term invented by Reilly publishing for a conference they were holding)... ask any group of marketers what web 2.0 is and you'll get a dizzying, confusing, mish-mashed myriad of answers... most of which will be wrong, full of BS and aimed at trying to get you to buy some overpriced crap solution/product...

What's funny is that those in the "tech" sector are really not talking about web 2.0 anymore... they've moved on... heck, they did that a long time ago... they are onto bigger and better things... greater ideas which will impact computing and the Internet more than ever before and change the landscape once again... techies are so over web 2.0 it's not funny... heck, web 2.0 was so 2 years ago for them...

So... what's on the horizon?... what's the latest buzz?... what are they talking about right now that gets them all hot and bothered in a nerdy, geeky, techno-dizzy kinda way?... what is the next huge, dynamic, overarching discussion point that's beaming into their brains like a million lasers let loose in a mirror factory?...

Well, it's... LOL!... WEB 3.0! (heck, they're even already talking about web 4.0!)...

That's right... the spawn of web 2.0 is now onto a new integer... creating new techno-meme's, developing new platforms and the killer-apps needed to deliver them...

What is web 3.0?... it's a technological mashup based on apps that are small, fast, adaptable, customizable and easily used by anyone, on any platform (PC, Mac, Linux, etc.) and designed to be run seamlessly mainly from the web itself and distributed virally via social networks, emails, easy downloads, etc... it's sort-of widget based technology but on a wider/higher level... imagine MS Office but being delivered not via CD on your own computer but distributed in a much more useable format (and accessible/run from) via the web...

Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google recently was recently asked about web 3.0 at the Seoul Digital Forum... his response is quite interesting and it gives insight as to why we (that being marketers) should be paying attention more to where the playing field is moving than what the "guru's" who are trying to sell us mostly hot-air are telling us it is...

Marketers need to wake up and realize that there are ideas, concepts and technologies we need to be paying attention to so that we can be ahead of the game as soon as it hits... we need to be a smart caveman, not a dumb one (the preceding is an allusion to a metaphorical story I tell at seminars that shows why you need to be paying attention to what's coming rather than running after what has already passed you -- I'll share that story here via video soon)... keeping your ear to the ground can often pay off big...

So that you can see/hear what Schmidt talked about in relation to web 3.0 and why you should be paying attention I've included a video of his response below...

Enjoy and learn!...

Success!!!

Recalls the days of 'Streamlined', when every half-baked product got redone with Modern, Streamlined, Space Aged, and Atomic design cues...

and my definition of 'working together seamlessly' is everything works fine right up til the moment it crashes your computer Wink

I plan to trade in my TRS-80 for a Fat Mac someday...

What I find funny, is that many who sell on the basis of it being Web 2. 0 don't have a clue what Web 2. 0 really is.

Can we think up a fun name, and then everyone and their dog will be promoting the next hot thing

Yeah, me too.  I mean seriously, layered sprites in the early 1980s? Talk about being a smart caveman.

So are we at the smart caveman phase if we are, or have solid plans, to implement these web based applications now? Or are we into the average IQ caveman?

I loved mine, as well.  Had to go to a 128 eventually.  Broke my heart when I couldn't get parts any more.

Bill Gates, of course!

2 out of 3.

I don't remember his name, but it was the CEO of IBM that made the quip
about PCs, and we all know how well they did when they finally became
the dumb caveman in that market. Evil

As a curious and awed reader of futuristic stuff like Ray Kurzweil's "The Age of Spiritual Machines" and Bill Joy's "Why The Future Doesn't Need Us" ( http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/8. 04/joy.html ), Tony's post sparked off a session of research on Web 3. 0 and 4. 0

Here are some interesting links I explored:

Web 3. 0

1.  Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_3

Will it be a Data Web, intelligent web, 3D web, semantic web or executable web?

2.  ZDNet blog (from 2005) - http://blogs.zdnet.com/SAAS/?p=68

Prescient and insightful piece.

3.  Times Online - http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/the_web/article2726190.ece

Is web 3. 0 about "making the Web smarter"?

4.  Jason Calcanis - http://www.calacanis.com/2007/10/03/web-3-0-the-official-definition/

Has his own 'official' definition of Web 3. 0 (I see some similarity with what Tony is doing right here on this forum)

5.  Read Write Web - http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/web_30_when_web_sites_become_web_services.php

When websites become web services

6.  Business Week - http://www.businessweek.com/the_thread/blogspotting/archives/2006/10/web_30.html

How an expert panel defines it

7.   Nick Carr - http://www.roughtype.com/archives/2006/11/welcome_web_30.php

Web 3. 0 will be about mining "meaning," rather than just data

8.  New York Times - http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/12/business/12web.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

A web guided by common sense

9.  Nova Spivack - http://www.kurzweilai.net/meme/frame.html?main=/articles/art0689.html

An expanded definition of Web 3. 0

Web 4. 0

1.  Seth Godin - http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2007/01/web4.html

Seth riffs on Web 4 in his usual refreshing style - over a year back

2.  ZDNet - http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=4499

3.  Nova Spivack - http://novaspivack.typepad.com/nova_spivacks_weblog/2007/02/steps_towards_a.html

It's about the next 25 YEARS of the Web!

= = = = =

Hope you find this interesting Smiley

And I remember back in 1986 I opened a Video store.  Had to buy a computer.
Got an AT&t 6300.
WOW it had 640 K ram and that was 128K better than anything else out there.
Had a 10 meg hard drive and the salesman said for an extra $100 you can upgrade to a 20 meg hard drive.
I replied, this thing is costing me $5,000 who in the hell would ever need a 20 meg hard drive?

I still have that one and my Commodore 64 and the 128.  I think I will set them up and se if they still work.
Should be fun.

Worth it, though, Lisa.

As I said, I'm curious.  And what Tony outlined sparked it off
and set it afire.

Seth's Web 4.0 post alone had me thinking hard for a long time.
